Greeley residents Gabe and Jody Lopez presented excerpts from their second book,a href=”http://www.highdesertrendezvous.org”louboutin outlet/a, “From Sugar to Diamonds” May 6 during the Brush Area Museum’s monthly Sack Lunch program.brbrIn the early ’20s, residents the Greeley Spanish Colony were known for making their living working primarily in the beet fields and bringing baseball to the community.brbrThe couple’s second installment covers the lives of the Greeley Spanish Colony people before they became known as the legendary Greeley Grays in ’38 and later the Rocky Mountain League of the National Semi Pro Baseball Congress.brbrDenver resident Robert Dudley takes a look at team photos from the Greeley Grays. Dudley felt the presentation was “interesting.”brbrThe book also showcases the history and stories of the Greeley Grays as well as all the teams they played, tournaments they were in and a variety of quotes, photos and newspaper clippings.brbr”We’ve acquired a lot of photos and stories from these people,” Gabe said of those interviewed. “We did as much as we could it’s been amazing.”brbrThe Greeley Grays (1938 1969) were considered a sugar beet league of “raw talent.” The men typically played in their work boots, Levi’s and t shirts and used second hand baseball equipment.brbr”Usually what they would get is broken high school baseball equipment,” Gabe said. “Back then it was kosher to do that; now it’s illegal. He then went to work for the railroads in Wyoming in the mid ’40s and soon returned to Greeley where he purchased two acres of land.brbr”He hand planted chilies and irrigated by hand,” Jody recalled. “He taught us exactly what he did in the beet fields.
